Aqualife Shell Fish Tank; a multiple awards winning development

World Packaging Organisation awards both WorldStar and Sustainable Packaging Award !

After being granted two European Awards for innovative packaging (silver version of Dutch innovation award "Gouden Noot" and the Scandinavian Scanstar) now also the WPO has awarded the shell fish tank which was jointly developed by Aqualife A/S and Promens Materials Handling Products.

What is the Shellfish Tank
The Shellfish Tank is a part of the logistic concept developed by Aqualife A/S and allows Shellfish to be transported alive to all parts of the world. So far transport by airplanes was the only way; the Shellfish tank now allows the better options of sea- and land transport.
Before despatch, the shellfish are placed in one of the 14 baskets inside the Shellfish Tank and the tank is connected to the docking station. Gradually the temperature of the circulating water is reduced so the shellfish will be put into a state of hibernation.
Twenty Shellfish Tanks are placed in to a 40ft sea container. Inside the container they are connected to a computer monitored system that will take care of water circulation, temperature control and air injection. During transportation four in the tank integrated filters will take care of water purification through specially developed water filtration techniques.
After arriving in the destination harbour, the containers with tanks can be loaded onto trucks for further transport over land. The shellfish are transported to their final destination and awakened from their hibernation state to arrive alive and fresh.
The Shellfish Tank can be used for different types of shellfish such as lobster, snow crabs, mussels and clams.

What has been the cooperation between Aqualife and Promens Materials Handling Products
Beside the technological and biological developments, Aqualife required also means of transportation as part of the project. After some research it became eminent that existing containers were not suitable for the intended sophisticated application.
When contacting Promens the response was positive. Based on Promens’ more than 45 years of experience with storage and transport containers, this seemed to be an interesting challenge.
One of the first meetings resulted in a list of technical requirements and the whish that also the looks of the product were of importance.
After this meeting, the development started, including studies on construction, design, application and especially use-related issues. There was the loading and unloading of the baskets in the tank, the flow of water and air, the circulation through the filter units. But also the impacts the tanks have to withstand on the boat in good but especially in bad weather. And as always, the proof is in the eating….!
Real size mock-ups were made for a test transporting snow crabs from Greenland to Denmark, through heavy storms.
Once all tests were concluded satisfactory, moulds were made and first proto types again had to go through numerous tests.

Value propositions of the Shellfish Tank
- shipping by ocean freight; half the price and 30 times more environmental friendly
- expanding the global menu card; bridging the long distance transport between resources and
markets, bringing fresh shellfish to the world’s tables
- animal welfare; the shellfish are freighted in a close to natural condition.
